Glomerulosa makes aldosterone, fasciculata makes cortisol, reticularis makes androgens

Cortex, from outside in, GFR:
- Zona Glomerulosa - mineralocorticoids (aldosterone). Salt
- Zona Fasciculata - glucocorticoids (cortisol). Sugar
- Zona Reticularis - androgens (DHEA, androstenedione). Sex
Then the medulla, catecholamines (adrenaline, noradrenaline), from chromaffin cells that are modified postganglionic sympathetic neurones supplied directly by preganglionic fibres.
The embryological origins differ: the cortex is mesodermal and the medulla is neural crest. That is why a medullary tumour (phaeochromocytoma) behaves so differently from a cortical one, and why it fits into the multiple endocrine neoplasia syndromes.
Blood flows from cortex to medulla, so medullary chromaffin cells are bathed in high-cortisol blood, which is required to induce the enzyme converting noradrenaline to adrenaline.
