Mnemonic

Camper's and Scarpa's Fascia

A mnemonic for the two layers of superficial fascia of the abdominal wall.

Expansion

Camper's is the fatty Cushion, Scarpa's is the Sheet

Expansion

  • Camper’s - the Cushion: fatty, superficial, continuous with the general superficial fat of the body
  • Scarpa’s - the Sheet: membranous, deep, with defined attachments

Scarpa’s fascia has a precise set of continuations that explain a classic clinical pattern:

  • Into the scrotum as the dartos fascia
  • Into the penis as the fascia of the penis
  • Into the perineum as Colles’ fascia
  • Onto the thigh it fuses with the fascia lata just below the inguinal ligament

Because of that last fusion, a ruptured urethra causes urine to spread into the scrotum, penis, perineum and up the anterior abdominal wall, but not down the thigh.
