Mnemonic
“PEST OF 6”, giving the eight bones of the cranial vault and base:
- P - Parietal, two
- E - Ethmoid
- S - Sphenoid
- T - Temporal, two
- O - Occipital
- F - Frontal
- 6 - six bone types, of which two are paired, giving eight bones
The sphenoid articulates with all the others, which is why it is described as the keystone of the skull base, and its greater wing forms part of the pterion, where the skull is thinnest.
