The related splenorenal (lienorenal) ligament carries the splenic vessels and the tail of the pancreas, and forms the posterior part of the splenic attachment.
Surgically these are the planes divided to mobilise the stomach. During a total gastrectomy or splenectomy, the short gastric vessels in the gastrosplenic ligament are short and fragile, and tearing them is a classic cause of troublesome bleeding, or of iatrogenic splenic injury from traction.
