Some Say Thyroid Often
Mnemonic
“Two sternos, two hyoids”, all depressing the hyoid and larynx:
- Sternohyoid
- Sternothyroid
- Thyrohyoid
- Omohyoid, with its two bellies and intermediate tendon
All are supplied by the ansa cervicalis (C1 to C3) except thyrohyoid, which takes C1 fibres travelling with the hypoglossal nerve, as geniohyoid does.
The names describe the attachments in order, so sternothyroid runs sternum to thyroid cartilage and thyrohyoid continues thyroid cartilage to hyoid; together they form a continuous strap from sternum to hyoid.
