Mnemonic

Common Fibular Nerve Injury - Foot Drop

A memory aid for the effects of a common fibular nerve lesion.

Expansion

Foot drop with loss of dorsiflexion and eversion and sensory loss over the dorsum of the foot

Expansion

  • Motor - foot drop from loss of dorsiflexion (deep fibular) and eversion (superficial fibular); the patient develops a high-stepping gait
  • Sensory - loss over the dorsum of the foot and the lateral leg
  • Site - most vulnerable as it wraps around the neck of the fibula

Test dorsiflexion and eversion, and look for a foot slap on walking.
