Mnemonic

Gluteus Maximus - Actions and Insertions

A memory aid for the actions and insertions of gluteus maximus.

Expansion

Extends and laterally rotates the hip, inserting into the iliotibial tract and the gluteal tuberosity

Expansion

  • Actions - the main extensor of the hip, and it laterally rotates the thigh; the upper fibres also help abduct
  • Insertions - most fibres into the iliotibial tract, and the deeper fibres into the gluteal tuberosity of the femur
  • Nerve - the inferior gluteal nerve (L5 to S2)

Its power role explains why inferior gluteal nerve injury shows up on stairs and when rising from a chair.
