Divides into the anterior tibial artery and the tibioperoneal trunk
Expansion
At the lower border of popliteus the popliteal artery divides into:
- Anterior tibial artery - passes forward into the anterior compartment and becomes the dorsalis pedis
- Tibioperoneal (tibiofibular) trunk - which then splits into the posterior tibial artery and the fibular (peroneal) artery
Along its course it also gives genicular branches that form the anastomosis around the knee.
