Saphenous Nerve

A memory aid for the saphenous nerve as the femoral nerve's leg branch.

Expansion

The largest cutaneous branch of the femoral nerve, supplying the medial leg and foot

Expansion

  • Origin - the terminal cutaneous branch of the femoral nerve
  • Course - travels through the adductor canal, then runs down the medial leg with the great saphenous vein
  • Supplies - sensation over the medial leg and the medial border of the foot
  • Purely sensory, so it carries no motor function

It can be injured during great saphenous vein surgery or harvesting, causing medial leg numbness.
