Mnemonic

Serratus Anterior - The Boxer's Muscle

A memory aid for the action and nerve supply of serratus anterior.

Expansion

Serratus anterior protracts the scapula and is supplied by the long thoracic nerve

Expansion

  • Action - protracts the scapula (pulls it forward around the chest wall) and helps rotate it upward for overhead movement
  • Nerve - long thoracic nerve (C5, C6, C7)
  • Sign of injury - a winged scapula, most obvious when pushing against a wall

The upward rotation it provides is essential for abducting the arm above 90 degrees.
