Mnemonic

Tibial Nerve Functions

A memory aid for the motor and sensory role of the tibial nerve.

Expansion

Plantarflexes and inverts the foot and supplies sensation to the sole

Expansion

  • Motor - the posterior leg muscles (plantarflexors) and the intrinsic muscles of the sole
  • Sensory - the sole of the foot, via the medial and lateral plantar nerves
  • Roots - L4 to S3

It passes behind the medial malleolus through the tarsal tunnel, where it can be compressed to cause tarsal tunnel syndrome.
